Project: Religions for the Earth Conference
Role: Event Sustainability (ISO 20121 and APEX/ASTM)
At the Religions for the Earth conference, held from September 19-21, 2014, at Union Theological Seminary, over 200 world religious leaders convened to discuss the moral and spiritual imperative of responding to the ecological crisis. Often speaking across faith and geographic lines, participants mined their own traditions for earth-honoring resources and explored ongoing efforts to fight climate change and environmental degradation. Timed to coincide with the UN’s summit on climate change and the People’s Climate March, spiritual leaders connected the devastation in the global South with the economic paradigm of the global North, identifying a sickness both spiritual and material.
Along with the conference, a multi-faith service held on September 21 brought together thousands of people at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine. Speeches and reflections by Chief Arvol Looking Horse, Al Gore, Rev. James Forbes, and Vandana Shiva, among others, called the congregation to commit to climate action.
