Sustainable Outdoor Festivals

Project:  Rally to Restore Sanity

Role:  Event Sustainability Management (ISO 20121)

The Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear was a gathering that took place on October 30, 2010 at the National Mall in Washington, DC. The rally was led by Jon Stewart, host of the satirical news program The Daily Show, and Stephen Colbert, in-character as a conservative political pundit.

TSI implemented a comprehensive event sustainability plan for the production which addressed waste, energy, materials, transportation, water, and stakeholder education.  The Green Team effort involved recruiting and training local volunteers to main the 3-bin "Eco Stations" to help educate attendees on recycling, composting and waste diversion.

The public transit plan also succeeded to the extent that the event set a public record for the most public transit rides on a Saturday in Washington D.C.
